WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump said the federal government should play a “vital role” opposing abortion but again failed to provide specifics on what national restrictions he would support if elected to the White House again.Trump’s remarks to a group of influential evangelicals Saturday on the anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning the national right to an abortion stood in contrast to that of his former vice president and 2024 rival Mike Pence.Pence, speaking at the same conference a day earlier, challenged every GOP presidential candidate to support the passage of a national ban on abortions at least as early as 15 weeks of pregnancy.Trump, the GOP front-runner, has been reluctant to endorse a national ban and has suggested restrictions should be left to the states. He has even suggested that pushing for increased abortion restrictions would be a political liability for Republicans, despite his three Supreme Court nominees making up the majorit...Red Sox fall to Andrew Benintendi’s White Sox in series finale

The Red Sox wrapped up their road trip in uneventful, unappealing fashion on Sunday, dropping their series finale to the Chicago White Sox 4-1.Their travels culminated in a 3-4 record full of wasted opportunities to pad their record against two mediocre American League Central teams. But wasting opportunities has been a theme all season, why should their sojourn in the midwest be any different?Over their weekend in Chicago, the Red Sox were 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position, and left 20 men on base.Adam Duvall was the only real bright spot in Sunday’s lackluster offensive showing. After going 0-for-8 over the first two games of the series, he collected back-to-back doubles and drove in his team’s only run. They were 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and as befit their opponents, left eight men out.“Today, we had chances early on,” Alex Cora acknowledged to reporters. “We haven’t hit with men in scoring position.”“We face...Wagner uprising is ‘direct challenge’ to Putin, Blinken says

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the Wagner mercenary group’s revolt against Russian President Vladimir Putin was a “direct challenge” to his authority and provides a battlefield advantage to Ukraine in its war to drive out Russian forces.“This raises profound questions. It shows real cracks,” Blinken said Sunday on CBS’s Face the Nation. “We can’t speculate or know exactly where that’s going to go. We do know that Putin has a lot more to answer for in the weeks and months ahead.”Putin faced the biggest threat to his nearly quarter-century grip on power after Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin led his troops toward Moscow. The situation has stabilized after the Kremlin said Putin guaranteed that Prigozhin could travel to Belarus and would drop criminal mutiny charges against him and the Wagner fighters involved in the rebellion.Blinken, who gave a consistent message across four television interviews Sunday morning, said the U.S. is focused on supporting Ukraine and its...US Coast Guard will lead investigation of Titan implosion with help from Canada, France, UK

By JENNIFER McDERMOTT and STEVE LeBLANC (Associated Press)The U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday it is leading an investigation into the loss of the Titan submersible that was carrying five people to the Titanic, to determine what caused it to implode. Capt. Jason Neubauer, chief investigator, said the salvage operations are ongoing, and they have mapped the accident site. He did not give a timeline for the investigation. Neubauer said the convening of a Marine Board of Investigation is the highest level of investigation conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard.Investigators are working closely with other national and international investigative authorities, including the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the French marine casualties investigation board and the United Kingdom Marine Accident Investigation Branch, Neubauer added. Evidence is being collected in the port of St. John’s, Newfoundland, in coordination with Canadian authorities. The ...Bumbling Mets implode in the 8th inning, suffer stunning 7-6 loss to the Phillies

PHILADELPHIA — The 2023 Mets haven’t often been able to get out of their own way. Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies, it was no different. In this particular game, Francisco Lindor homered and Pete Alonso hit his league-leading 24th homer, and the Mets were almost able to overcome an inefficient start by Carlos Carrasco. But they couldn’t overcome an infield error and three walks and two hit batters by two relievers in the eighth inning. The Phillies scored four runs on only one hit in the eighth to come back from a 6-3 deficit to win 7-6 and take the series, 2-1.It was another stunning loss for the Mets (35-42) in a season full of them.Alonso’s home run came off left-hander Jose Alvarado in the seventh, an opposite-field insurance blast that ultimately wasn’t enough. Rookie reliever Josh Walker ran into trouble, loading the bases in the eighth without getting an out. Another defensive miscue, this one by Brett Baty at third, cost the Mets a run....How to swim at resorts without the hefty price tag
